Because the historical and archaeological records of most forms of body art are incomplete, we still don't know where and where tattooing originated.

There are many examples of tattooing in ancient Egypt, the oldest found on the mummy of Egyptian priestess of the goddess Hathor at Thebes, Amunet, who lived approximately 4000 years ago, she was tattooed with parallel lines of dots. Because of her religious status, some archaeologists have speculated that her body art had spiritual or magical connotations. Others feel the designs were of sexual nature.

Some of the most diverse, ornate, and bizarre body art was found in the mysterious and complex world of Maya between 300 and 900 A.D. For Maya, body modification, whether temporary or permanent, were done for spiritual reasons as well as beautification. Full body tattoos or facial tattoos, were acquired by men and women.

When Captain James Cook set sail in his Endeavor in 1769, he visited many islands of Pacific Ocean, most of which included tattooing as part of their culture. It's Cook who gave us the "tattoo" word based on similar words in Polynesian cultures that were used to describe the practice.

On board the Endeavor was Sir Joseph Banks. Along with cataloging many types of animal and plant life, Banks documented the indigenous cultures at every stop along the way. Included in these notes are many references to tattooing. When Banks returned to England in 1771, he disembarked with a permanent memento of his voyage: the very fist tattoo on a modern Western man!

On December 8,1891, the first electric tattoo machine was registered by inventor Samuel O'Reilly, at the United States Patent Office. He began working out of a barber shop in New York City, calling his business a "tattoo parlor" - the first tattoo studio in the United States.

Soon tattoo parlors were springing up all over the country. During the First and Second World Wars, different branches of military adopted tattooing as a means of mystical protection, a souvenir or remembrance.

In the mid-1970s, tattooists began holding tattoo conventions. Tattoo artists from all over the countries gathered together as a group to talk shop and show off their work.

Due to the conventions, magazines, and other kinds of exposure, tattooing began to emerge as a form of fashion. People started to recognize its artistic merit and use it as a way to express personality and religious belief.

Charles Darwin, in The Descent of Man, observed that "Not one great country can be named, in which the aborigines do not tattoo themselves." Ancient and modern peoples have used tattoos as means to a seemingly infinite number of ends.

Temporary Tattoo Dangers to Children

A doctor has issued a warning to parents when it comes to wearing temporary tattoos created with black henna. Dr. Sharon E. Jacob in a presentation to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that black henna commonly used in creating temporary tattoos, causes serious skin reactions.

Dr. Jacob, assistant clinical professor of pediatrics and medicine (dermatology) at the University of California, San Diego was particularly concerned about the effects on children, although adults also suffered allergic reactions to the dye. The offending chemical component responsible for skin irritation in black henna is para-phenylenediamine (PPD).

Use of black henna can result in eczema, swelling, blisters and even lead to permanent scarring, among other things. In her presentation, Dr. Jacob also noted that children as young as four were getting tattoos created with black henna and were reacting to the dye.

Black henna is used at fairs & carnivals, malls and other places where families take children for entertainment. According to Dr. Jacob there is a popular belief that black henna is harmless, but she states that “nothing could be further from the truth.” She is quoted on MSN Health & Fitness discussing this misconception: “Kids make up a significant portion of the population that receives temporary tattoos, because parents mistakenly think they are safe, since they are not permanent…”

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does prohibit the use of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) directly on skin. However, persons still add black henna to natural henna (which is safe) so as to make the markings more long-lasting.

The next time you go somewhere and want to allow your child or children to get those attractive temporary tattoos ask what ingredients are in the dye being used. If it contains PPD, you should just walk away. This doesn’t mean that all henna is dangerous and cause allergic reactions. Vegetable henna that has not been modified with the addition of PPD is safe for use.

How to select the right valve for your application

Valves have long been more than just a simple device for turning on and shutting off flow. Valve design has kept in step with industrial progress - the development of piping techniques, and the ever-growing list of fluids for processing, power, and finished product. Industry loses millions of dollars each year through the consequences of improper valve selection. Improper valve selection can promote valve failures, which can result in loss of system fluids, out of "spec" product, downtime expenses, unsafe workplace conditions, and environmental damage.

So, how can you confidently select a valve that will install easily, perform safely and reliably, and offer the lowest maintenance and overall cost in your system? You must ask yourself three questions below:

1. What type of fluid will the system carry?
Before selecting a valve, consider the type of fluid the system will carry. Is the fluid viscous or thin? Gas or liquid? Corrosive or inert? Such variables can affect system components and operation. For example, fluid viscosity affects system flow and valve requirements. Fluids that are more viscous reduce system flow and leakage. On the other hand, a high-pressure, light gas will move freely along its flow path, but can be more difficult to seal.
Some gases, such as hydrogen and methane, present significant ignition hazards, and even the smallest leak to the atmosphere can be catastrophic. If the system fluid is a toxic gas, such as arsine or phosphine, leakage to the atmosphere can be even worse. Corrosive gases or liquids such as hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulfide, or even steam can damage components and actually remove material by chemical or physical attack.

2. What are the system operating conditions?
System operating conditions, such as temperature and pressure, are also important factors in choosing a valve. For example, consider material selection in high- or low-temperature applications; component materials with varying expansion rates can allow fluid leaks. Plastic components can shrink and leak, or they can absorb water and other system media and become brittle at low temperatures. Elastomers, too, can harden and crack in cryogenic service, and they have high thermal coefficients of expansion. In addition, differential pressure can affect sealing capability. For example, a system operating at 1000 psig (68.9 bar) can leak 10 times the amount of the same system operating at 100 psig (6.89 bar).

3. Do you know the different characteristics of different valves?
Progress in valve design puts at the piping engineer's elbow a great variety of valve types, each with some special qualification for service. From these you may choose the right one to provide dependable and economical performance in each particular need.

Gate Valve

Commonly used in industrial piping, this type of valve, as a rule, should be used as a stop valve...to turn on and shut off the flow, as opposed to regulating flow. It gets its name from the gate-like disc which operates at a right angle to the path of flow.

Globe and Angle Valves
The flow through globe valves follow a changing course, thereby causing increased resistance to flow and considerable pressure drop. Because of the seating arrangements, globe valves are the most suitable for throttling flow. The valve is named after its globular body.
Angle valves, similar in principle and a companion line to the globe, are designed to permit a 90 degree turn in piping and are less resistant to flow.

Check Valve


Sometimes referred to as the non-return valve, the check valve stops backflow in the piping. Unlike the gate and globe valves, this simplest of types operates automatically.


Ball Valve

Unique in design, this valve controls the flow of a wide variety of fluids. It can be opened or closed in a quarter-turn of the operating handle. The name "ball" is derived from the ball-shaped disc located within the body. A hole through the center of this disc provides the straight-through flow which is characteristic of ball valves. Light and durable, these are the valves that are playing increasingly important roles in our nation's missile projects, as well as in industry and commercial buildings.

Butterfly Valve
Here's a valve that is extremely durable, efficient and reliable. The butterfly valve derives its name from the wing-like action of the disc which operates at right angles to the flow. Its chief advantage is a seating surface which is not critical. The reason for this being the disc impinges against a resilient liner to provide bubble tightness with low operating torque.

In summary, choosing the correct valve is not always easy. It's a matter of knowing every detail of the job to be done - working pressure, temperature, fluid, volume of flow, corrosive elements, valve operating cycle, etc. other equally. When you choose the right valve, you help maintain a safe environment, eliminate costly downtime, and benefit from increased reliability and leak-tight operation and performance.

While emailing with my friend Dan about (a) his new birthday tattoo1 and (b) his lack of luxuriant flowing locks preventing him from joining the Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists™, I was prompted to search out a club that the tattooed scientist can call home. And now I share with you:

Those scientists have some pretty awesome tattoos, like this DNA ankle tattoo on a molecular and cell biology instructor at a University in Atlanta. If it weren’t for my (a) crippling fear of needles and (b) remarkable fickleness which would result in my being bored with any tattoo I chose before the ink dried, then I too would want to join the Emporium.

Also, while checking out the Emporium I noticed an ad for “made with molecules” - a company that makes jewelry that looks like molecular structures. I totally want this dopamine necklace. You know, in case you were looking to buy me a present.

Tattoo Tempest

Some Utah pool patrons are upset about a tattoo.

Specifically, a tattoo depicting an angel with nude breasts, on the back of a woman.

Laura Call was visiting the pool about two weeks ago with her husband, 1-year-old daughter and another couple. She said she — and those with her — became concerned after seeing a detailed tattoo depicting a woman’s breasts on an individual’s back. Call said she complained to a lifeguard, but nothing was done.“With it being so graphic, especially at a public place, I don’t think it should be allowed,” she said.

Take note that this is the only complaint the city has received, but only one noisy moralist seems to be enough these days to make politicians consider passing restrictive laws and ordinances.

The director of the Parks and Recreation department says that the city is in a bit of a "pickle" over the incident and promises to "talk to other professionals in the state" before making a decision. Call wants the city to force people with "offensive" tattoos to cover up.

Most of the public responses to the news article are supportive of the woman with the tattoo. Stephen says:

" As a point of reference, topless female bathing is socialy acceptable on most European beaches. Advertisement in Europe display topless or even naked bodies, and naked sex is viewed on German and Italian television. If such practices are not within the realm of family ethics, one need only teach this to their children. Demanding that all of society conform to conservative morals is one of the things Americans point to as distasteful in some Middle Eastern cultures. "

Ever since I was a young lad, I’ve wanted to get tattoos. I finally got one last night. It isn’t anything big. It’s a scripture (Psalm 16:8) on the inside of my right wrist. The 16th Psalm is an incredible poem which, according to the author of Acts, is speaking of the resurrection of Christ. Now that I have it, I just want to go get more. I MUST GET MORE!

"What's in the box?"

"Pain." He felt increased tingling in his hand, pressed his lips tightly together. How could this be a test? he wondered. The tingling became an itch... The itch became the faintest burning... It mounted slowly: heat upon heat upon heat... . The burning! The burning! He thought he could feel skin curling black on that agonized hand, the flesh crisping and dropping away until only charred bones remained.


This excerpt from Dune exactly describes the feeling of getting a tattoo burned into skin using a laser cutter; however, this is just the feeling. When sight, smell, and sound are added, the process turns out to be quite an experience.

The sound by itself (meaning no body parts in the cutter), is probably the easiest thing to deal with. It is just the normal whine of gears, belts and cooling fans. When that sound is mixed in with the sensation of burning flesh, it turns the laser cutter from a simple machine shop tool to a futuristic torture device.

The sight is not too bad, just a light tracing its way back and fourth across the body. As long as you don't think about the fact that the small wisp of smoke trailing the light, is actually vaporized skin, everything will be fine.

The smell is bad. It does not travel far, but when you catch a whiff of the burnt flesh stench, it is quite nauseating. The thought that you have just inhaled some of those vaporized skin flakes, and they have settled on the bottom of your lungs, is the worst.


I am leaving a disclaimer out of this, because any person with access to a laser cutter who is dumb enough to try this, deserves what they get.
